Q

relavitism?

A

the right thing to do is dependent on the context -not absolute relavitism as this would mean making moral decisions in a completely random and intellectually irresponsible way where as love is the reason to act (context for all moral decisions is agape and this should be shiver everything
fletchers cab driver said, “sometimes you have to push aside your differences and do the right thing”

Q

analysis of relavitism?

A

-makes it no ethics at all, lacks a concept of guiding principles of right and wrong which makes it hard to create a just society eg Jacqueline Savage given clemency for killing husband (will these lead to more murders?)
-doesn’t exclude any type of person (total cultural relavitism)
-jesus went agains the bible to heal on the sabbath and put himself on the level of god “i am”

Q

positivism ?

A

idea that love is always positive and so should be the basis of all moral decision making, although it cannot be proved that agape is the only intrinsic good but fletcher uses christian teachings to attempt to
eg -we love because god loved
-love your neighbour as yourself
-John 1:17 “grace and truth come through Jesus”

Q

analysis of positivism?

A

-assumes that love is alway good, what about pedophilia
-eliminates atheists or other religions as his proof comes from the bible rather than a proven source but surely these people don’t need to take a leap of faith to show love in action

Q

analysis of personalism?

A

-rules can changes, just because somethings a rule doesn’t make it right eg the discriminatory act changed in 2010 to include discrimination against sex, disability and gender reassignment
-Jesus said ,”the sabbath was made for man not man for sabbath”, and he healed on the sabbath ,putting people above the laws of OT
-could let to antinomianism due to humans need for survival eg killing people

17
Q

what are the six prepositions ?

A

the rules of situation ethics

18
Q

“only one thing is intrinsically good, namely love and nothing else”

A

-fletcher calls love the one principle of ethics
-some things are extrinsically good as they help you to achieve a higher purpose which fletcher completely discredits eg faith
-love can be too subjective eg what’s loving to some isn’t loving to others eg stalin killed 13 million religious people out of ‘love’ for his country

19
Q

what are the six prepositions?

A

the rules of situation ethics

20
Q

“only one thing is intrinsically good, namely love : nothing else”

A

-some things are extrinsically good as they helps is to achieve a higher purpose eg faith
-love can be subjective, what some view as loving other don’t eg Stalin killed 13 million religious people out of love for his country

21
Q

“the ruling norm of christian decision making is love, nothing else”

A

-in the NT Jesus constantly replaces aspects of the OT eg not stoning a woman for adulatory
-“we follow law,if at all for loves sake we cannot love for laws sake”
-christianity doesn’t treat people with love eg Gomorrah and Salem is against homosexuals
-treatment of women but jesus treated women well
-evidenced in society through water aid and street pastors, completely selfless and fuelled by love
