Situation Ethics Flashcards
Joseph Fletcher uses examples of ? ? to illustrate when and how traditional ethical rules might be broken in situations where the most loving thing to do, in his view, justifies setting aside moral norms (? ? and ? ?). Fletcher’s examples were criticised as being exceptional, that weren’t suitable for a general moral theory. But he proposed situations ethics as a method for making moral decisions in extraordinary circumstances where the usual moral rules didn’t seem to work.

Situation ethics focuses on the particular situation, the interests of the individual person, and love and justice and might permit the breaking of traditional moral rules around sex in day-to-day situations, seeking a ? approach to ? and ? sex and same-sex unions, setting aside fixed moral truths in order to put the person and their relationships at the heart of each decision.

Situation ethics’s ostensibly concerned with matters of selfless unconditional ? love and would focus on the injustices in the way sexual relationships are regulated: the fact that heterosexual married couples are often viewed as the only form that a legitimate relationship can take would be viewed as ?

Situation ethics puts the needs of the primary ? first, making it difficult for it to protect broader family interests and the interests of society.
