Become Drouet’s mistress and move into a quarters he has rented for her.
What doubts does she have in Drouet?
He is non-committal to marriage, lacks sensitivity and Carrie desires more wealth than he can provide.
Who is Hurstwood?
Drouet introduces them - he is manager of high end, popular saloon however he is dissatisfied and no longer feels head of his household.
What happens between Drouet and Hurstwood?
Hurstwood and Carrie begin an affair - Drouet commits himself to marriage with Carrie whilst Hurstwood resolves to steal her away.
What happens when Mrs. Hurstwood finds out about the affair?
Drinks in his saloon - realises the safe is open and steals the cash. He tricks Carrie to leave the city with him as Drouet had supposedly been injured in a faraway land.
Where do the couple settle?
Hurstwood returns most of the money and they settle in New York as Carrie and George Wheeler.
What happens to Hurstwood’s business?
It fails, he loses his job and asks Carrie to live more cheaply which she does not want after realising her life pales in comparison to the life of her neighbour Mrs. Vance.
