(Act I Scene 1) Deloris: Take me to Heaven! Take me to Ecstasy!
walk on stage
(Act I Scene 1) TJ: Uncle Curtis, I thought they were good.
(with Ernie and Pablo) Yeah!
(Act I Scene 1) Curtis: What?
Ernie: They’re no good.
They’re no good.
(Act I Scene 1) TJ: They say whatever I have skips a generation.
TJ laughs, then Pablo joins him. Then Joey. Then Ernie. Curtis looks at them and they instantly silence
(Act I Scene 1) Curtis: Gentlemen, we have a quick meeting.
Curtis and his four thugs exit
(Act I Scene 2) Ernie: It wasn’t me boss, it was Joey
I wouldn’t tell on you, Boss.
(He is moved)
I love you.
(Act I Scene 2) Curtis: So it wasn’t any of you.
Joey, Pablo, TJ, & Ernie: (desperately) No.
(Act I Scene 2) Deloris: Shhhhhh. We musn’t wake Ernie. I’ll just tiptoe out of here and see what else my fur goes with. See…I’m just gonna slide on outta here. Again, saw nothing. Nothing. (She exits)
Boss. Boss, whatta we do?
(Act I Scene 2) Curtis: Bring her back. I think it’s time for us to have a little talk.
What if she doesn’t want to come back?
(Act I Scene 2) Curtis: Kill her.
Curtis exits as the thugs run off
(Act I Scene 8) In the police station:
Deloris’ blue coat is still on the chair.
A cop is removing Curtis’ handcuffs. He is with the three thugs.
Standing, fidgeting with other thugs
(Act I Scene 8) Curtis goes to stand with his thugs
Straighten up
(Act I Scene 8) Eddie: (Taking off his jacket and sitting in his chair)
You can call me all the names you want, but I’m sitting pretty.
(As he folds his hands behind his head, he reveals large sweat stains under his arms. _______________.)
Curtis and his thugs start laughing.
(Act I Scene 8) Eddie (cont.): Curtis, just know we got a secret witness who’s gonna help us put you away.
(He storms out)
They got a stool pidgeon. Who’d did they get to squeal?
(Act I Scene 8) Curtis: I don’t know. With all I done, it could be anybody.
(He sees the fur coat. This stops him. He picks the fur up and stares at it, then holds it up for the thugs to see.)
Joey: Hey! That’s Deloris’ coat!
(Act I Scene 8) Pablo: Desgraciada! Como nos hizo eso?!
Joey: Their witness is Deloris!
(Act I Scene 8) Joey: Their witness is Deloris!
Joey/Pablo/TJ: (ad libbing) What are we gonna do? Etc. etc.
(Act I Scene 8) Curtis: Look at me. Do I look nervous? We’ve got everything just where we need it. They have Deloris? Fine. So we’ll get Deloris.
Joey: How are we going to do that boss?
(Act I Scene 8) Joey: How are we going to do that boss?
Joey/Pablo/TJ: (ad libbing) What are we gonna do? How are we gonna find her? Where even is she? Etc. etc.
(Act I Scene 8) Curtis: Boys boys boys. Remember who you’re talking to. I know Deloris.
When I Find My Baby starts ♫♫♫
(Act I Scene 10) Pablo: How we gonna find Deloris in a whole big city like Philadelphia?
Joey: Yeah. It’s not like she’s just gonna walk right up to us and say “Merry Christmas”
(Act I Scene 10) Waitress: It’s on me.
Deloris: Bless you.
(The waitress walks away)
Joey: So Pablo you take North Philly and Center City and West Philly too. I’ll stay here in South Philly. And TJ-you take Germantown. Ready?
(Act I Scene 10) Deloris: Look at you go girl. Do you want a nickel?
(to the room)
Who’s got a nickel?!
Joey: I’ve got a nickel for you, Sister.
(Act I Scene 10) Deloris: God loves you.
Joey: Here you go. Merry Christmas.
(Joey hands Deloris a nickel. They both turn around. They both take two steps past each other, stop, think for a moment.)
Nah.
