Sinus Tumors Flashcards
Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma
Classically a tumor that affects adolescent males.
Often polypoid tissue composed of central thick vessels and surrounding slit-like vascular spaces with a dense, eosinophilic, fibrous or collagenous stroma containing fibroblasts and/or myofibroblasts. They frequently contain abundant mast cells.
Stromal cells have abnormally high nuclear beta catenin staining and scattered androgen receptor staining.
Contain CTNNB1 (beta catenin) mutations.
Chronic rhinosinusitis
Characterized by thickened basement membrane (minimal criteria) directly beneath respiratory mucosa and around seromucinous glandular tubuli. Lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate, goblet cell hyperplasia. Squamous metaplasia may be present, especially if the patient is a smoker.
This will be one of your most common diagnoses.
