‘In di worst Indian shop / on di whole Indian road’
- REBELLION
The ‘worst’ - intensifier exaggerates contrast between reliable narrator and careful father.
Standard has dropped to a level even below all the other Indian businesses - narrator believes relationship is more important.
‘Lemons are limes yor bananas are plantain’
- REBELLION
Shop-keeping become negligent and disorganised.
‘Plantain’ is the West Indian name for banana, indicating perhaps the confusion of cultures - humour and exaggerates narrator just wants to be with his bride.
‘Each night she say…priceless baby’
The repetition of ‘each night’ shows how their love is enduring, while the word ‘priceless’ in the final couplet indicates, despite her faults and flaws, he truly loves her. Contrasts with meaningless cut-price offers in the failing shop.
