Simple Molecular Substances Flashcards
What is a molecule
A group of atoms chemically bonded together
What are simple molecular substances made up of?
Molecules containing a few atoms joined together by covalent bonds
What are the forces of attraction between molecules like?
Weak
What state of matter do simple molecular substances tend to be?
Gas, liquid or low melting-point solids
Because it doesn’t take much energy to break these bonds
How are the atoms held together?
Strong covalent bonds
What bonds do you have to break to melt/boil a simple compound?
The intermolecular bonds, not the covalent bonds
What happens as the molecules get bigger?
The strength of the intermolecular forces increase
More energy is needed to break the bonds
Melting and boiling points increase
Why don’t the molecular compounds conduct electricity?
The compounds aren’t charged, so they can’t move around.
Are simple molecules soluble in water?
Yes
