Simple Molecular Structures Flashcards
What are the bonds like within molecules?
Strong
What are the bonds like between molecules?
Weak and require little energy to overcome
Why do they have low melting and boiling points?
It is because the weak intermolecular forces of attraction between the molecules only need a little energy to overcome
Why can’t they conduct electricity?
It is because there are no freely mobile electrons or ions to move throughout the structure and carry a charge
What happens when the size of the molecule increases?
The strength of the intermolecular forces increase and the boiling/melting point get higher
Why does Nitrogen have a low boiling point?
The intermolecular forces of attraction between the molecules are easily overcome, so it requires little heat to break them
