Simple Molecular Structure Flashcards
Substances with simple molecular structures have low melting and boiling points
Within each (bromine)molecule, the (bromine) atoms are held together by strong covalent bonds. However, (bromine) the molecules are held together by weak intermolecular forces of attraction which can be easily overcome. As a result, (bromine) has low melting and boiling points and is volatile. (evaporates easily)
Most substances with simple molecular structure do not conduct electricity in solid, liquid or gaseous state.
This is because simple molecular substances do not have any free moving ions or electrons to conduct electricity.
Substances with simple molecular structures are usually insoluble in water but soluble in organic substances.
exceptions: alcohol and sugar are covalent compounds but are soluble in water
