Simple Machines Test Flashcards
What is a compound machine?
A machine that is made up of two or more simple machines
What are simple machines?
Simple machines transfer energy from one object to another to make it move or change direction
What is a complex machine?
Eg; satellite, console, transport, electronics, robots, lawn mowers, appliances
Why are simple machines used?
Because they make life easier
Types of simple machines
Inclined plane, wheel and axle, gears, levers
Examples of gears
Bike gears, hand operated egg beater, hand operated drill, corkscrew, clock
Examples of wheels and axles
Doorknob, screwdriver, ceiling fan, pulley
Examples of levers
Scissors, can and spoon, hammer, wheelbarrow, nut cracker, bottle opener, tweezers, staple remover, softball bat
Examples of inclined planes
Ramp, road winding around a hill, wedges, screws
What is a first class lever, examples
Load-fulcrum-effort
Hammer, can and spoon, scissors
Force multiplier
What is a second class lever, examples
Effort-load-fulcrum
Wheelbarrow, nut cracker, bottle opener
Force multiplier
What is a third class lever, examples
Load-effort-fulcrum
Tweezers, staple remover, softball bat
Speed multiplier
What is a force multiplier
A simple machine that supplies a greater force than the effort used, the effort must be applied over a greater distance than the load is moved.
What is a speed multiplier
A simple machine that increases the speed of an object. The effort applied must be greater than the load but applied over a shorter distance.
