The number of times a machine multiplies the input force; output force divided by input force.
Mechanical advantage
The percentage of the input work done on a machine that the machine can return in output work. A machine’s output work divided by its input work and multiplied by 100.
Efficiency
One of the basic machines on which all other mechanical machines are based.
Simple machine
A solid bar that rotates, or turns, around a fixed point; one of the six simple machines.
Lever
A fixed point around which a lever rotates.
Fulcrum
A simple machine that is a wheel attached to a shaft, or axle.
Wheel and Axle
A wheel with a grooved rim that turns on an axle; one of the six simple machines.
Pulley
A simple machine that is a sloping surface, such as a ramp.
Inclined Plane
A simple machine that has a thick end and a thin end.
Wedge
A simple machine that is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder.
Screw
Any device that makes doing work easier.
