Simple machines Flashcards
simple machine
A simple machine is a device, made of only one or two parts, that needs a single force to work.
Inclined plane
Is a flat supporting surface tilted at an angle, with one end higher than the other. An example would be a ramp where wheelchairs go down.
wedge
Is a type of inclined plane that can be moved back and forth with ease. An example would be the angled block of wood that people use to leave doors open. They put the wedge under the door.
A screw
is an inclined plane that has been cut into a central core. In the olden times, the screw was used to collect water.
Lever
is a plank or rigid beam that is free to rotate on a pivot
Fulcrum
The pivot point of the lever
Load arm
is the part of the bar between the fulcrum and the object or load you want to move
effort arm
is the part of the bar between the fulcrum and where the force is being applied
input force
the force that is being applied by the user
output force
is the redirected push that the lever applies to the load
load force
the force that the input force has to overcome in order to cause movement
wheel
a circular object that rotates on an axle.
axle
a rod passing through the center of the wheel or a group of wheels
gear
is a modified wheel of the axle. They are commonly made of metal or plastic. They are used to speed up or slow down motion. An example would be the gears rotating while you are riding a bike.
Pulley
is a device that uses wheels and axles to make pulling objects easier.
