simple Machines Flashcards
Name the 6 simple machines
Inclined plane, the wedge, lever, wheel and axle, screw, pulley
What’s an inclined plane?
An inclined plane is a flat surface set up at an angle against a surface.
Ex: stairs, a bath tub
What’s a wedge?
A wedge is two inclined planes joined together back to back.
Ex: an ax, a doorstop
What is a screw?
A screw is a rounded post with an inclined plane wrapped around it.
What is a pulley?
A pulley is a rope, belt or chain wrapped around a grooved wheel.
Ex: a crane, window blinds
What is a wheel and axle?
A wheel and axle is made up of two circular objects of different size. The axle is attached to the centre of a larger wheel.
Ex: doorknobs, roller skates
What is a lever?
A lever is a rigid bar that rests on a fulcrum.
Give 3 characteristics about incline planes.
1) flat surface
2) No moving parts
3) slanted surface
3 characteristics of a wedge
1) slanted
2) triangular
3) two inclined planes joined together
3 characteristics of the screw
1) cylinder
2) inclined plane wrapped around it
3) pointy at the bottom
3 characteristics of the pulley
1) rotates
2) chain, belt or rope
3) fulcrum
3 characteristics of the wheel and axle
1) circular
2) big wheel
3) small wheel
3 characteristics of the lever
1) rigid bar
2) load
3) fulcrum
What is a simple machine?
A simple machine is a device that makes it easier to do work - work is when you move something over a distance. The more force you use the more work you’re doing. It makes it easier by allowing you to use less force or by changing the way you use the force
What is the order of a first class lever?
Force - fulcrum - load
