Q

What is a wheel and axle

A

It’s a type of lever the wheel turns around small cylinder called an axle the wheel and axle can help us lift and move heavy loads the wheels reduce friction so things can move easier

Q

What is a movable pulley

A

A movable pulley includes 2 or more pulleys and ropes and reduces the force needed by half

16
Q

Name 5 examples of a first class lever

A

Paint can opener, shovel, scissors, bottle opener, and a dolly

17
Q

Name 3 examples of a second class lever

A

Nut opener, wheel barrow, and a dolly

18
Q

Name 3 examples of a third class lever

A

A hockey stick, baseball bat, and a fishing rod

19
Q

What’s the advantage of a chain drive

A

Less slippage

20
Q

What is a block and tackle

A

A fixed pulley and a movable pulley linked together by ropes

21
Q

Name 5 examples of a fixed pulley

A

Clothes line, flag pole, window blinds, wheel and rope, and a wishing pulley

22
Q

Name two belt drive systems and how to the driver and follower move

A

Crossed belt makes them move in opposite directions

Regular belt makes them move the same way

23
Q

How do gears move on wheel on wheel contact?

What if there’s an idler

A

No idler they move in opposite directions

1 idler in the middle makes the wheels turn in the same direction

24
Q

How do gear on a bike work?

Which do you use to go uphill and downhill

A

2 gears are attached by a chain and so the pedal is the lever turning the pedals drives the chain
Uphill: lower gear you have to pedal more to make it easier to go uphill
Downhill: higher gear you pedal less and the wheel turns more

25
Q

What happens if you add more pulleys to help lift something

A

The effort is cut in half making it easier

26
Q

What is a compound machine

Give two examples

A

Two or more simple machines joined together
Bike(levers, gears, wheel and axle)
Can opener( lever, gear)

27
Q

Name 6 simple machines and give examples

A
Levers 1st teeter totter, 2nd nut opener,3rd fishing rod,
Wheel and axle, door nob, Ferris wheel
Inclined plane, wheel chair ramp
Wedge, knife, door stopper
Screw, screw
Pulleys and gears, clothes line, bike
