Simple Machines Flashcards
Define a simple machine and list all main 6.
Any object with few or no moving parts that makes a task easier or more efficient. Screw, wedge, inclined plane, lever, pulley, wheel and axle.
What is a lever?
A simple machine that uses the turning effect of a force.
What is a fulcrum in terms of levers?
The point in which a lever turns about.
What is effort in terms of levers?
The applied force.
What is the load in terms of levers?
The weight lifted by the lever.
What is a Class 1 lever and an example?
A lever with the fulcrum in between the load and effort. Seesaw etc.
What is a Class 2 lever and an example?
A lever with the load in between the effort and fulcrum. Wheelbarrow etc.
What is a Class 3 lever and an example?
A lever with the effort in between the load and fulcrum. Shovel etc.
What is a speed multiplier?
An object that increases the speed or distance travelled by another object.
What is a force multiplier?
An object that decreases the effort required.
Provide an e.g. of a lever in the human body.
Bones act as lever arms, joints act as pivots, and muscles provide the effort forces to move loads
