Q

What is a lever?

A

A lever is a firm bar resting on a fulcrum, used to move a heavy or firmly fixed load with one end when pressure is applied to the other.

Q

Explain how a mechanical advantage can be obtained from simple machines such as levers, inclined planes, pulley systems and gears.

A

To find the ideal mechanical advantage of an inclined plane, divide the length of the slope by its height. With a lever, if the distance from the effort to the fulcrum is greater than the distance from the load to the fulcrum, then the lever has a mechanical advantage. The mechanical advantage of a pulley system is equal to the number of ropes supporting the movable load. Lastly, for gears, the mechanical advantage is given by the gear ratio.

Q

Why are third class levers called speed multipliers?

A

Because a larger force is applied by the effort, the load travels further distance.

Q

Ramp makes it easier to push or pull objects. What is the penalty for making this task easier?

A

It takes less force to move an object in an upward direction on an inclined plane than it does to lift the object straight up.

15
Q

why is the circular doorknob called the force multiplier

A

By applying the effort on the wheel, the force is multiplied on turning the axle.

Q

Why is a ceiling fan called a speed multiplier?

A

It increases the distance of air which makes it blow towards a you.

17
Q

How is a pulley useful even tho it don’t decrease the size of force needed to lift a load?

A

It still lifts up the load.

18
Q

Why is it good to use two pulleys instead of one to lift heavy loads?

A

So it doesn’t fall and there is enough force to lift it

19
Q

What are gears?

A

Gears are mechanical parts with cut teeth designed to fit with teeth on another part so as to transmit or receive force and motion

20
Q

What can gears do instead of making things go faster?List as many devices that use gears.

A

They can increase the power of a turning force. Some are non-digital clocks, vehicles, drills, manual can openers and bicycles

21
Q

Define the following terms, buoyancy, surface tension, lubricant, gravity, air resistance, friction.

A

Buoyancy is a force on an object making that object rise or move upward. Surface tension is Surface tension is a force which causes a layer of liquid to behave like an elastic sheet or skin allowing insects to walk over it. Lubricant is a substance used to reduce friction between surfaces. Gravity is the thing that holds everything down on the floor. air resistance is a type of friction between air and another material. And lastly friction is a force between two surfaces that are sliding across each other.

22
Q

What is mass and weight measured as unit is measured in kilograms?

A

1kg weighs 9.8 Newtons so you do the math.
