Silviculture Flashcards
ASCETICS
Basal Area
the average amount of an area (usually an acre) that is occupied by tee stems. cross section of all stems in a stand measured in BDH per unit of acre (ex: sq ft per acre)
Basal Spraying
applications to control thin barked trees (< 6” usually) in hardwood stands as improvement to remove undesirable and invasive trees and shrubs
BMP
Best Management Practice
Bolts
Short or short sections of a large log
usually < 8ft
Clear Cut
where most of the standing trees are logged at the same time in an area of forestland
Cloning
genetically identical - multiplying to have exact replicas- useful for mass progagation and production of short duration tees
Controlled Burn
aka prescribed burn, setting planned fires to maintain the health of a forest, scheduled for times when not posing a threat, reduces understory promoting regeneration, restore degraded ecosystems, reduce fuel loads to minimize risk and impact of wildfire
Crown thinning Cut
selectively removing stems (trees) / branches that impact the crown of other trees/ to increase light penetration and air movement throughout the crown
DBH
diameter at breast height
Diversion ditches
a ditch built to channel stream or sheet (surface or subsurface) run off (water) in a desired direction / or to divert it from a specific slope
Forester
expert in the practice forestry- science of managing forests/ ecological restoration and how trees serve people
Genotype
Girdling
Harvest
High Grade Cut or Selective Cut
Increment Bore
Intermediate Cut
