Sildering And Flux (with Copper) Flashcards
What is flux?
A reliable material for soldering metals.
Name 3 purposes of flux.
- Removes tarnish or oxide from metals.
- Prevents further oxide from forming while Metal is being heated
- Allows the molten solder to spread over the area and penetrate where it should.
What is Oxidization?
A film or coating present on clean metals which are exposed to the atmosphere.
Name 2 types of non active flux.
- Tallow
2. Resin
Name 2 types of active flux.
- Muriatic acid
2. Hydrochloric acid
When is an active flux used?
In conditions where the metals are oxidized.
What is soldering?
The process of fastening two or more pieces of metal by means of an alloy that has a lower melting point than the metal being joined.
What is the deciding factor when selecting a solder?
The temperature of the fluid in the system.
How is solder drawn into the joint?
Capillary action.
Always flux the _____ of the pipe and the _____ of the fitting
Outside of the pipe
Inside of the fitting.
How much solder should you use?
As much solder as the diameter of the pipe four up to 1 inch pipe. Larger diameters incense by 25% per inch
Name 5 gasses used for soldering.
- Acetylene
- Propane
- Butane
- Natural gas
- Oxyacetylene
