The illusion that the physical world is more important than the spiritual
Haumai
The selfishness that develops if they are fooled by Maya
Sewa
Act of worship. Selfless service. Needs Simran to ensure it is selfless
Simran
Act of worship. Keeping God in mind at all times, needs Sewa to make it meaningful
Selfless
Doing something without the hope of reward for yourself.
Khalsa
The collective name for the Sikhs who have taken extra vows to show their commitment to their faith.
5 K’s
Symbols worn by members of the Khalsa - comb, uncut hair, steel bangle, underwear, dagger
Guru Granth Sahib
The Sikh holy book. Believed to contain the Atma of the 10 gurus. Contains teachings and hymns
Gurdwara
The Sikh place of worship
Hukam
God’s Will
Jivan Mukhti
The reunion of the Atma with Waheguru. The goal for Sihks.
Transmigration of the soul
The movement of the Atma towards Jivan Mukhti
Karma
The positive or negative consequences of our actions. A natural law of cause and effect. Impacts Jivan Mukhti.
Langar
The free kitchen, a meal held at the Gurdwara. Example of Sewa.
Reincarnation
The Atma being reborn
Manmukh
Being selfish and “man-centred”
Gurmukh
God-centred. Not selfish. Focused on the spiritual world.
Caste System
The class system of India at the time of Guru Nanak
