SIJ Flashcards
Describe the functional design of the sacroiliac region.
The sacroiliac joints and pelvic girdle transfer large mechanical loads between the lumbosacral spine and lower extremities to function normally during daily activities
What is form closure?
Stable situation with closely fitting joint surfaces; no extra forces are needed to maintain equilibrium of the system given the current load situation. Also, resting tension of the ligaments that connect the sacrum to each coxal bone contributes to form closure.
Why is perfect form closure not ideal for SIJ movement?
Perfect form closure does not allow SIJ movement and therefore does not allow the SIJ to dissipate forces converging in the pelvic region during daily activities.
