Election of 1800: Revolution of 1800
Jefferson and Adams running for president: Hamilton’s disdain of Adams would divide the Federalists, giving Jefferson an opportunity to win. Peaceful transfer of power btwn political parties.
1810: NOT A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
War Hawks began to take over Congress over issue of possible war with Britain
Election of 1824: Corrupt Bargain Election
J. Q. Adams won in the House of Reps, Jackson didn’t have enough electoral votes to win. Clay dropped out of the race and Adams won; he then appointed Clay as Sec. of State, causing Jacksonians to blame him of bribing Clay to stop running.
Election of 1840: Log Cabin Election
Whigs nominated William Henry Harrison (“Tippecanoe and Tyler too”) because he was extremely similar to Andrew Jackson. Harrison died shortly after his inauguration.
Election of 1844
Polk won on the platform of re-occupation of Oregon and Texan statehood. “54’40 or Fight!”
Election of 1860
Four factions: Northern Democrats, Southern Democrats, Constitutional Union, and Republican Party. Lincoln (Republican) won without a single vote from a Southern state
Election of 1932
Hoover vs. FDR: Roosevelt won on the promise of a “new deal:” he became the first and only president to have more than two terms (served for 4 before untimely death)
