XYZ Affair
1798 Diplomatic incident between US and France, “quasi-war” at sea. Led to formation of US Navy. Settled with Convention of 1800.
Missouri Compromise
1820 admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as free.
Outlawed slavery above 36 degrees, 30’ in the rest of the Louisiana Territory.
Compromise of 1850
- Allowed slavery in DC but outlawed trade.
- CA admitted as free state.
- Popular sovereignty in UT and NM.
- New boundaries for TX and NM.
- Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
required citizens to assist in capture of runaway slaves, denied enslaved people a right to trial by jury.
Kansas-Nebraska Act
1854
repealed Missouri Compromise.
Created 2 new territories, allowed for popular sovereignty.
Homestead Act
1862
Granted 160 acres of public land to anyone settling on it for 5 years.
Civil Rights bill 1866
Granted former slaves right to make contracts, sue, be witnesses in court and to own property.

Alien and sedition acts (1798)
US was on the brink of war with France. The laws made it more difficult to become a citizen and easier to arrest, imprison and deport aliens.
Sedition Act made it a crime to say or print “any false, scandalous, and malicious writing” about the govt.
