Signals Flashcards
When thinking of the absolute section, what would be included?
Distant signal
Home signal
Section signal
Station limits
Service braking distance
What is the clearing point?
A 400 metre safety buffer placed beyond EVERY home signal
What is an intermediate block section
For longer distance lines, or stations they allow more than one train on the line at one time
What is a fixed signal?
They are positioned in locations where the next signal is always at danger, or the speed of the train needs to be reduced
Examples:
Level crossings
Single lines
Sidings
Loops
Dead end stations
What is permissive working?
This is authorised work approved by the signaller to let drivers enter stations and shunt without breaking the main principle of one train in one section at each time
What is the minimum amount of lunar lights on a junction signal to take the signal as valid?
3+
Anything less than 5 must be reported as a signal irregularity to the signaller
True or false? The off indicator must be blank to move off
False, the off indicator will show off when the signal ahead has gone green to proceed
What is a CO-Acting signal
This is a duplicate signal where the original one is obscured
What does a banner repeater do?
This links with other signals where action is required from the driver in advance. Such as bends/tunnels. It gives the driver a head up prior to
How far are spad indicators placed from associated signals?
50 metres
How much clearance is given from the Home signal
400 metres
How can you differentiate a semi automatic sign?
It will say Semi on it
How can you tell what is controlled when looking at signs?
White writing on a black background shows its controlled signaller
What is an IBJ (insulated block joint)?
Signal sections are separated by an IBJ. Once the train has passed the section, the circuit is broken meaning the signal reverts to danger
How much distance for 2 aspects
440 yards
How much distance for 3 aspects
300 yards
4 aspects
200 yards
What sign shows it’s a distance signal
White triangle on black background
What does it mean when the aspects on a route indicator are flashing double yellow?
Gives you advance of a diverging junction ahead where the facing points are set
When alight is double flashing yellow, what does this mean?
This means you are approaching a junction
What do position lights do?
Give you a go ahead to move past a signal at danger
If you spot a signal irregularity. What must be completed after notifying the signaller?
The driver must complete a RT3185 form
Name signal irregularities
Signal reversion
Not displaying correctly
Missing/broken
Incorrect route offered
What is used to show a signal is not in use?
Black bag or a white cross if a semaphore
