Signalling Flashcards
Draw warning indicator for permanent speed restriction.
Page 43 RS521 Warning indicators. He wants the mph one
What 2 publications contain details of permanent speed restrictions (PSR)?
Sectional appendix and route maps
Draw two different types of lineside signage that indicate the commencement of a speed restriction.
Page 43 of RS521 permissable speed indicators. He wants the stenciled one and the mph one.
When is the warning indicator for a PSR associated with an AWS magnet?
When the speed reduction is a third or more.
What type of train is associated with; MU - HST - SP - DMU - CS
Multiple units - High speed train - Sprinter - Diesel multiple units Class 67 locomotive
What does an enhanced permissable speed indicator (page 46 RS521) apply to.
It applies to tilting trains in tilting mode. If it is a differential enhanced permissable speed indicator then the bottom figure which always shows the higher speed will apply to class 390 and the other figure applies to class 221.
What publication and in which section can temporary speed restrictions (TSR) be found?
Section A of the WON.
What details can be found regarding the TSR in this publication?
Commencement of TSR in miles and chains. Which line it is over. The speed throughout the TSR. Time/date the TSR comes into affect and is removed.
Draw and label basic setup of TSR (6 points).
Page 9 of SP the left hand diagram.
You have an AWS at a signal (showing green) which is also associated with a warning board for a TSR. What warning do we get from AWS equipment on train and why?
We get warning horn which needs to be cancelled and sunflower lights up. This is because electro magnet portion of AWS magnet has been disconnected so signal aspect being green is irrelevant.
What is SPATE?
Signal previously advised/advertised terminated early.
Draw TSR with SPATE boards.
It’s the TSR from page 9 SP again but with warning indicator becoming a SPATE warning indicator and the commencement board becoming a SPATE board.
Draw 1 version of consecutive TSR.
Page 15 SP either diagram.
Draw 1 version of a TSR within another TSR.
Page 18 SP either diagram.
When does a TSR become an emergency speed restricton (ESR)?
If it’s not published in the WON. If the speed within the restriction has become more restrictive (gotten slower) than what is published in the WON. The date/time it applies has changed from what is shown in the WON. The restriction has been re imposed after having been removed.
Draw and label ESR 9 points.
Page 31 of SP. Diagram on the left. Commencement and termination boards should be added to this diagram.
On a differential speed restriction what types of train do the different speeds apply to?
The bottom number which is the highest speed applies to PPL (passenger/ECS, parcel and light locomotive). The other speed applies to everything else.
3 places repeating warning boards can be placed.
End of platform if commencement board is more than 300m from platform. Entrance to the running line from siding or yard. Coming from a dead end platform line.
Draw an AWS cancelling indicator and describe its meaning.
Page 37 RS521 can be either the temporary or permanent AWS cancelling indicator.
Draw a TSR on a single or bi-directional line.
Page 13 of SP module.
What equipment relating to a TSR or ESR must be reported immediately if it is missing or defective? What must be reported at earliest opportunity?
If missing or defective warning board. Emergency indicator. Speed indicator/commencement board. Repeating warning board. At earliest opportunity termination board.
3 reasons for a blanket speed restriction.
Adverse weather. OLE problems/failure. Any other operational difficulties.
What lineside signage is provided for blanket speed restrictions? .
None
Does lineside signage relieve you of responsibility to read notices and WON? .
No
