Side 1 Flashcards
We (Humans) get energy from….
the food we eat
Directly or indirectly, almost all energy in living things comes from…
the sun
What are Autotrophs?
organisms that make their own food - also known as producers
What do chemoautotroph do?
they synthesize organic compounds using chemicals
What do photoautotrophs do?
uses sunlight as their energy source
What are Heterotrophs?
organisms that must obtain their food - known as consumers
What must heterotrophs eat?
Other organisms
Most heterotrophs are…
mobile
Venus fly traps are…
both autotroph and heterotrophs. This plant needs both sunlight and insects to survive.
What is photosynthesis?
process by which light energy is converted to chemical energy
what is cellular respiration?
similar to burning fuel.
explain cellular respiration:
Burning=most energy in fuel to heat
C.R. = most energy in food to ATP
ATP provides cells with energy needed to carry out life activities
(ATP= adenosine triphosphate)
What happens in cells:
chemical energy stored in food is released in a series of enzyme assisted chemical reactions.
Some energy in cells is released as
heat
Remaining energy in cells is stored in
ATP molecules
