Shug Flashcards
Shug is described as being bold, she isn’t like other ‘respectable’ women. People look down on her because she isn’t the same as everyone else.
‘He talk about a strumpet in short skirts, smoking cigarettes, drinking gin…Talk bout slut, hussy, heifer and streetcleaner.’ (22)
Shug speaks her mind, she is rude to Celie. Shows how women of a higher status treated those of a lower one. An example of weak sisterhood.
‘Then she cackle. Sound like a death rattle. You sure is ugly, she say, like she ain’t believed it.’ (22)
Shug cares for Celie, and protects her from Albert’s abuse. Contrast to before in the novel where she treated Celie like dirt.
I won’t leave, she say, until I know Albert won’t even think about beating you.’ (34)
Sisterhood and relationships intertwine. Shug is incredibly loving to Celie, in contrast to the previous male figures in her life.
‘Shug say, Us each other’s peoples now, and kiss me.’ (69)
