Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey?
- Test brakes as you set off, brakes should not feel spongy or slack & the vehicle shouldn’t pull to one side.
Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressure for this car and how the tyre pressure should be checked?
- Information is in the manufacturers guide. Use a reliable pressure gauge. Check and adjust when the tyres are cold. Check the spare tyre and remember to refit valve caps.
Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash?
- The rigid part of the head restraint should be behind the eyes and the top of the ears and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.
Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road?
- There shouldn’t be any cuts or bulges. There should be at least a 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyres all there way around.
Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.
- Turn on the ignition and then the headlights on. I would then walk around the vehicle and check they are working.
Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system?
- A warning light should come on the dashboard if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.
Tell me how you would check the direction indicators are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.
- I would put on the hazard lights and then walk around the vehicle and check they are working or I could put the ignition on and then the indicators on and check.
Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working on this car?
-I would turn on the ignition and then press the brake pedal and ask someone to check or make use of reflections in windows or doors.
Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey?
- When the engine is OFF, the steering should feel heavy and when I start the engine it should feel lighter.
Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you’d use them. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.
- I’d turn on the ignition and then the headlights on and then the fog lights on, and a warning light would come on. They must only be used if visibility is less than 100 meters.
Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you know the main beam is on.
- I’d turn the ignition on, headlights on and then the main beam on and a blue light would come on.
Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient oil.
- Open the bonnet and point to the dipstick and explain… “I’d take out the dipstick and wipe it then put it back in, take it out again and check the oil is between the minimum and maximum” Point to where you would add the oil if necessary.
Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant.
- Point to the engine coolant and explain “I’d check its between minimum and maximum lines”
Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
