Tell me how you would check the brakes work before starting a journey
Brakes shouldn’t feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off and shouldn’t pull to one side
Tell me where you would find the info for the recommended tyre pressures for the car and how tyre pressure should be checked
Manufacturer’s guide, car manual or sticker on the door panel. Use a pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, keep a spare tyre and refit the valve caps
Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in a crash
Should be adjusted so the rigid part of the restraint is at align with the eyes or top of the ears and as close to the back of the head
Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure they have sufficient tread depth and their general condition is safe to use on the road
No cuts or bulges, 1.6mm tread depth across the central 3-quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference of the tyre
Tell me how you would check the headlights and taillights are working
Turn the engine on, turn on the dipped headlights and walk around the vehicle to check they’re working
Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with ABS
Warning light will appear on the dashboard when you start the car if there was a problem

Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the vehicle and check all six indicators work
Tell me how you would check the brake lights are working
Turn on the engine, press the foot brake pedal and use reflections in windows or doors or ask someone to help and walk around to check the brake lights work
Tell me how you would check the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey
Before starting the journey, gentle press the steering wheel while turning the engine on and it should move slightly. Or turning the steering wheel just after moving off will feel light to turn not heavy
Tell me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them
Use the rear fog light when visibility drops below 100 metres. Turn the engine on, turn the dipped headlights on and press the button for rear fog lights, indicator will show up on the dashboard
Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on
Turn on the engine, turn on the dipped headlights and press the main beam button, check with the blue main beam warning light on the dashboard
Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check the engine has sufficient oil
Identify dipstick/oil level indicator
Check oil level by removing dipstick, wipe it clean of oil, dip it back in, remove it again and the oil should leave a mark against the minimum and maximum markers
Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check the engine has sufficient engine coolant
Identify high and low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap and describe how to top up to correct level
Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid
Identify reservoir and check level against high and low markings
Show me how you wash and clean the rear windscreen
Check
