Show Me Tell Me Flashcards
How would you check that brakes are working before starting your journey
Brakes should not feel spongy or slack, and should be tested as you set off.
The vehicle should not pull to one side
Where would you find the information for your car’s recommended tyre pressures, and how should tyre pressures be checked?
Tyre pressures can be found in the manufactures guide.
To check, used a reliable tyre pressure gauge, and check and adjust tyres when they are cold.
Remember to check the spare tyre, and refit all valve caps
How would you make sure the head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in a crash
It should be adjusted so that the rigid part of the head restraint is at least ah high as the eye or the top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as comfortable.
Some restraints are not adjustable
How would you check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road?
There should be no cuts and bulges, with a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre.
How would you check that the vehicle taillights are working?
Explain that you’d operate the switch, and walk around the rear of the vehicle and check
How would you know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system?
A warning light should illuminate on the dash if there was a fault.
Tell me how you would check that the direction indicators are working?
Explain that you’d operate the indicator stalk or hazard switch and walk around the vehicle, checking for lights.
Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working in this car?
Explain that you’d operate the brake pedal, and either look for reflections on doors or windows, or ask for help.
Tell me how you’d check the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
As the engine is started, I’d apply gentle pressure on the steering wheel. There should be a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to work.
Alternatively, as you pull off you could turn the steering wheel, an indicator that it’s not working would be that it may feel heavy.
Explain how you’d operate the rear fog lights and explain when you’d use them
Operate the switch, and explain that rear fog lights are to be used when visibility is poor, either in dense fog or falling snowless and visibility is less than 100m
