Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
- Open the bonnet and point at the dipstick
- Pull dipstick out (covered in oil)
- Get a cloth and wipe oil off
- Put it back in, pull it out and it will leave an oily mark in between the min and max level
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
- The level should be in-between the min and max
- Never open up because its pressurised and could be dangerous.
Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.
- Take the cap off and make sure there is enough water (hasn’t got max and min levels)
Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

- Should be between min and max level
Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
- Brakes should not feel spongy or slack.
- Brakes should be tested as you set off.
- Vehicle should not pull to one side.
Tell me how would you check the tyre pressure and how would you know how much air to put into the tyre.
- Check the tyre pressure with an air pressure gauge
- Check all 5 wheels
- Check when tyres are cold
- The car manual will say how much air to put in the tyre.
Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
- Check with tyre tread depth gauge
- Check central 3/4 of tyre to make sure it has no less than 1.6mm depth
- Check for cuts or bulges
- Check all 5 tyres.
Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
- Head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.
Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working (no need to exit vehicle).
- Turn ignition on
- Turn the lights on (turn knobs next to keys)
- Check that the front lights are working and also the back lights.
Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.
Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.
- They all come on when you turn the ignition on but when you start the car they should go off.
Show me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car, (if you need to switch the ignition on, please don’t start the engine).
- Turn on ignition
- Operate brake pedal
- Make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone to help,
Show me, or explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
- Power steering doesn’t work unless engines on so start the car.
- Steer left and right so it feels nice and easy to steer
Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
- Turn ignition on
- Press the button on the end of the right lever.
Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.
- Press the hazard warning lights button (red triangle)
- Get out the car, check the front lights are flashing and also the rear lights are flashing
Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively.
- Turn fan onto max setting (bottom left dial all the way round to the right)
- Direct the air so it blows onto the front windscreen (turn middle dial all the way round to the right)
