How do you check the brakes are working?
Apply gentle pressure at slow speed. Shouldn’t feel spongy/ slack/ pull to one side

How do you check tyre pressure
use a pressure gauge
- check and adjust pressure when tyres are cold
- don’t forget spare tyre
- refit valve caps
How do you check a tyre has sufficient tread depth and they are road-safe?
- no cuts/ bulges
- 1.6mm across central ¾ of breadth of entire outer circumference
where should head restraint (rest) be at?
rigid part should be
- close to back of the head
- level with tops of ears
check head lights/ tail lights working?
Turn on and get someone to check
How can you tell there is a problem with the ABS (anti-lock braking system)?
ABS warning panel would illuminate if there was a problem
How to check oil level/ that there is enough oil
Find the dipstick
- make sure it’s clean and then dip in
- check against max/ min markers
Where is break fluid reservoir
flower shaped cap. Maybe black with yellow (at the back)
How do you check there’s enough break fluid?
check against high/low markers
How to check power assisted steering is working before starting journey
- If steering heavy, system may not be working
1. Start engine, gentle pressure on steering wheel, should be slight but noticeable movement
2. Move off, turn steering wheel
Check handbrake for excessive wear
- apply footbrake
- apply parking brake so that when it is fully applied, it secures itself
Check horn?
ONLY OFF ROAD, gently press
Check indicators/ hazards
turn on, ask someone to check, or look in reflective surface
Check break lights?
Get instructor to go behind car/ look in mirror. Don’t turn engine fully on, only ignition
