Show me, tell me Flashcards
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the sufficient level
Identify the dipstick (yellow top). with the vehicle on level ground I would remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and replace it. I would remove it again to obtain a true oil level, which should be between the maximum and minimum mark.
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant and tell me how you would check that the engine has the right level.
Engine coolant expansion tank is on the left handside of the engine bay (black top). with a cold engine and on level ground check is coolant is between maximum and minimum mark.
Open the bonnet and identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level
The windscreen washer reservoir is located in the left hand side of the engine bay (blue top). Checking the level is difficult, as the bottle isn’t easily seen so it is topped up regularly.
Open the bonnet and identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
Brake fluid reservoir is on the right hand side at the rear of the engine bay ( yellow top). Brake fluid must be between high and danger marks on the side of the container.
Tell me how you would check the brakes are working before the start of a journey.
I would depress the brake pedal to check for resistance. If there is no resistance then the brakes don’t work. Alternatively I could move forward slowly and apply the brakes to check their operation. If they failed I would be going slow enough for it to be safe to use the handbrake to stop the car.
Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure they have the sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe for road use.
Tyres should have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the 3/4 of the width of the tyre in a continuous band around the tyre. They should have no cuts or bulges.
Tell me where you would find the information that recommends tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressure should be checked.
Tyre pressure information is found in the vehicle handbook or on a label at the end of the driver’s door. Before a journey and whilst tyres are cold, I would remove the valve caps and using a reliable gauge check and adjust pressures including the spare. I would then refit the valve caps.
Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working (no need to exit the car)
I would operate the light switch and walk around the car to check that each light is working.
Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so that it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
Starting from its lowest position the head restraint should be adjusted so that the rigid part at the top is at least as high as the top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as comfortable.
Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.
An amber warning light on the dashboard will illuminate if there is a fault with the ABS.
Show me/Explain how you would check the power assisted steering is working before the start of the journey.
I will put light pressure on the steering wheel and I should feel resistance. I will now start the engine and resistance should be reduced. If it does then the power steering is working correctly. If the steering goes heavy during a journey the power steering has developed a fault and a warning light will illuminate on the dashboard
Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.
Switch ignition on, then direction indicator to the left and walk around the car to check they’re working, including wing repeater light. Use the process to check the right hand indicator. Alternatively switch on the hazard light.
Show me how you would check that the horn is working
Briefly press the centre of steering wheel.
Show me how you would check the handbrake for excessive wear.
Handbrake is fully applied after 3-4 clicks. it takes a lot more if there is excessive wear.
Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the washers and wipers.
Operate the switch to wash and wipe windscreen. You will need to switch ignition on to do so.
Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light and explain when you would use it.
Turn on ignition, switch on dipped headlights and rear fog light/ check the amber warning light above fuel gauge is on. used when visibility is less than 100m
Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear the windscreen effectively, this includes both front and rear screens
Set all relevant controls including; Fan, temperature, air direction/source and heated rear window switch to clear windscreen and windows. You aren’t expected to start engine.
Show me how you switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on while in the car.
Switch head lights on, this automatically illuminates dipped beam. Then click indicator stalk towards the steering wheel, this switches to main beam showing a blue warning light on the dashboard.
Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car. ( I can assist you). If you need to switch the ignition on please don’t start the engine.
I will switch the ignition on and operate the brake pedal. If you would please check to see if they work. Thank you. If unable to get assistance I would use reflections in windows.
