Drive forward slowly, press the footbrake. It shouldn’t feel spongy or pull to one side
Tell me where you’d find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for the car and how tyre pressures should be checked
Check and test all the tyres (including the spare tyre) when they’re cold using a pressure gauge. Re-fit the valve cap after. Tyre pressure information will be in the car manual, or a sticker on one of the door pillars.
Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash
It should be adjusted so that the ridged part is as high as your eye, or top of the ears, and as close to the back of your head as possible. Adjust using the button underneath.
Tell me how you’d check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road
Use a tread-depths gauge. The depth should be less than 1.6mm across the central 3 quatres breadth of the tyre. Check all the way around the tyre. There should be no cuts or bulges.

Turn on the ignition, turn on the dipped headlights. Leave the car and check the headlights and tail lights are working.

If there was a fault, the ABS light would stay on when you start the car.

Press the foot break, and see the reflections or ask someone to help and check.
Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting the journey
Give the steering a bit of pressure when starting the engine. There should be a slight movement as the power-steering begins to operate. When you move off, the steering should not be heavy.
Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog lights and explain how you’d use them
You would use them when visibility is less than 100 meters. Turn on the ignition and turn on the dipped headlights, then the rear fog-lights. You will know it’s on as a warning will come up on the dashboard. Switch them off once conditions have improved.
Tell me how you’d switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and how you’d know the main beam is on
Turn on the ignition, turn on the dipped headlights, then push then push the left stork towards the dashboard for main beam. A blue warning light will appear to show main beam is on.
Show me how to wash and clean the rear windscreen
Wait until it is safe. Look for the rear washing symbol on the right stork and push it towards the dashboard for as long as necessary.
