Indicators working
Ignition on, don’t start engine
Apply indicators or hazard lights and check that they are functioning
Brake lights
Ignition on, don’t start engine
Operate brake pedal and check reflections in windows etc or ask someone to look
Power assisted steering
if steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly - 2 simple checks:
- Gentle pressure on the steering wheel while engine is started should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate.
- Turning the steering wheel just after moving off
Parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear
Apply foot brake firmly.
Demonstrate by applying handbrake so when it is fully applied it secures itself.
Horn working properly
Press horn (ignition may need to be on)
Clean windscreen
Operate control to wash and wipe windscreen (ignition on)
Switch on rear fog lights and explain when you would use it/them
Operate switch (ignition on and dipped headlights)
Check warning light is on.
Explain use
Switch headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you know the main beam is on
Operate switch (ignition on)
Check main beam warning light is on
Set demister controls to clear windows
Set controls - fan, temperature, air direction, source and heated screen to clear windows
