shoulder review Flashcards
What bones make up the shoulder girdle
clavicle and scapula
What are the 5 main joints of the shoulder
sternoclavicular, acromioclavicular, glenohumeral, scapulothoracic, coracoclavicular
what are the 3 ligaments of the shoulder and where are they located
acromioclavicular- at acromion process of clavicle
coracoclavicular- stretching from coracoid process to clavicle
transverse ligament- runs along top of deltoid
what are the muscles of the rotator cuff and what are their actions
subscap- internal rotation
supraspinatus- external rotation
infraspinatus- external rotation
teres minor- external rotation
what is shoulder separation
in jury of AC joint- damage to ligament, cause falling on outstretched arm or trauma
what is shoulder dislocation
humeral head pops out of glenoid cavity cause- contact or direct blow to shoulder, treatment is strengthen. Likely to occur repetively
what is winging scapula
Scapula protrudes out, loses stability. Cause- blunt trauma due to repetitive movements. Treatment is strengthen with rows or pushups
What is impingement
Pinching/rubbing and wearing away. Cause- overuse from repetitive shoulder activities. will tear if nothing is done. Supraspinatus is commonly impinged
what is glenohumeral instability
inability to maintain the humeral head in the glenoid cavity. Cause- shoulder labrum is torn off of the glenoid fossa by trauma or repetitive motion. There is too much movement then ligaments are stretched and can’t go back. Leads to arthritis treatment- strengthen muscles around joint
What is thoracic outlet syndrome
occurs when blood vessels or nerves between clavicle and first rib are compressed or pinched. Arm/hand go numb and feel heavy. Cause- physical trauma such as car accident or repetitive sports injuries typically overhead sports. Treatment is stretches or surgery
What position is the shoulder stable and most unstable in
stable- hand is near body
unstable- hand is away from body and abducted
What is SLAP lesion
Long head pulls and humerus grinds on labrum. Damage to shoulder labrum or tear in biceps tendon superior labral tear from anerior to posterior. Cause- trauma , fall with out-stretched arm treated surgically
In which joint do the bones not touvh
coracoclavicular
