Shoulder exam Flashcards
What does the supraspinatus muscle do?
Abducts the humerus
What does the infraspinatus muscle do?
Externally rotates the humerus
What does the teres minor muscle do?
Externally rotates the humerus
What does the subscapularis muscle do?
Internally rotates the humerus
What are the joints of the shoulder?
glenohumeral joint, sternoclavicular joint, acromioclavicular joint, scapulathoracic articulation
What do you look for on inspection?
Asymmetry
Deformity– separation or dislocation
Atrophy
Signs of trauma (swelling, ecchymosis)
What do you assess for ROM?
Forward flexion
Abduction (supraspinatus)
External rotation (infraspinatus and teres minor)
Internal rotation (put hands behind back, subscapularis)
What do you assess for strength testing?
Abduction -- deltoid, supraspinatus External rotation-- infraspinatus, teres minor Internal rotation -- subscapularis Flexion-- biceps Extension -- triceps, C7 "Empty can" -- supraspinatus "Lift off test" -- subscapularis
What does the “scarf test” assess?
AC joint pathology
Cross arm adduction
What does the Neer impingement test assess?
passive forward flexion with internal rotation–> subacromial impingement
What is the order that you do the shoulder exam?
inspection ROM strength special tests palpation
What do you palpate?
clavicle acromion AC joint scapula Supraspinatous tendon Biceps tendon
