Shoulder and Elbow Problems Flashcards
What movements can precede a shoulder dislocation?
Abduction
External rotation
Extension
Followed by a posterior-directed force
What other injuries are shoulder dislocations commonly associated with?
Concurrent humeral fractures occur in 25%
Rotator cuff tears almost always occur in elderly patients
How does an anterior shoulder dislocation present in posture?
Arm is externally rotated and slightly abducted
How does a posterior shoulder dislocation present in posture?
Internally rotated and adducted
How is the elbow held posturally when dislocated?
Elbow held in flexion
What is the treatment for shoulder dislocation?
Manipulation
Immobilisation
Physiotherapy
Surgery
What is the definition of subacromial impingement?
Pain and dysfunction resulting from any pathology which decreases the volume of the subacromial space or increases the size of the contents
What is the management of subacromial impingement?
Subacromial Steroid injection
Physiotherapy
Arthroscopic subacromial decompression
What is adhesive capsulitis?
Frozen shoulder is defined as the symmetrical loss of both passive and active motion due to soft-tissue contracture.
What are the signs and symptoms of a rotator cuff injury?
Elderly patients due to tendon bloody supply diminish shoulder pain Shoulder weakness Loss of active ROM Pain and weakness on external rotation test Pain and weakness on empty-can test Deltoid pain Night pain Pain and weakness on lift-off test Pain and weakness on belly-press test Pain on Neer impingement test Pain on Hawkins impingement test
What is the difference between golfer and tennis elbow?
Tennis- is a condition in which the outer part of the elbow becomes painful and tender. The pain may also extend into the back of the forearm and grip strength may be weak.
Golfer-causes pain and inflammation in the tendons that connect the forearm to the elbow. The pain centres on the bony bump on the inside of your elbow and may radiate into the forearm.
