Shoulder Flashcards
How to palpate the sternal notch?
In between collarbones. Remember to go all the way round
How to palpate the sternoclavicular joint?
Side of sternal notch - remember to go all the way round
How to palpate the clavicle?
Start at sternal end and palpate all the way along. Remember it goes around a bit of a corner so make sure you do full length
How to palpate the acromioclavicular joint?
Feel along clavicle. When you think you’re at the joint if you make them elevate their shoulder you might be able to feel A and C articulating so you know you’re in the right place. Palpate all the way around joint with acromion
How to palpate the acromion?
Can go straight to acromion. Remember to go all the way round
How to palpate the coracoid process?
Move medially from lateral end of clavicle, then drop down off the clavicle and palpate in that dip until you find coracoid
How to palpate the greater tuberosity/ tubercle, intertubercular or bicipital groove, and lesser tubercle of humerus?
Follow the clavicle laterally around its curving length until you reach the acromial end. Then shift inferiorly until you find a lump = greater tubercle. Externally rotate their arm until you feel a groove under your fingers = inter tubercular groove. Then shift anteriorly on to the lesser tubercle.
How to palpate the spine of the scapula?
From posterior angle of acromion palpate medially along spine
How to palpate medial border, inferior angle, lateral border of scapula?
You can go straight on to the medial border. Then travel inferiorly, around the inferior angle and up along the lateral angle as far as you can feel it
How to palpate the joint line of the shoulder?
Locate the coracoid process and the posterior angle of the acromion. Shift about 1cm laterally from the coracoid and 1cm medially from the posterior angle of acromion. Then both fingers shift about 2cm down. In between your fingers is the joint line. You’ll be on soft tissue and if you move their arm you can feel it move around
