Short Term Control of BP Flashcards
What is the main influence on Bp short term?
The Baroreflex
Describe the Baroreflex.
The Baroreflex involves baroreceptors which detect the stretching of blood vessels in response to changes in the MAP.
What is MAP?
Mean Arterial Pressure
What two factors affect MAP?
Cardiac Output and TPR
Where are the Baroreceptors situated?
In the Aorta and the Common carotid arteries.
What happens to the receptors when the vessels are stretched.
Stretching triggers an increase in frequency of Action Potentials and vice versa.
Which nerves carry the sensory information from the Baroreceptors and where does it go?
The Vagus nerve and the Glossopharyneal nerve.
The impulses are sent to the Medulla.
Which systems does the Medulla then trigger?
The Parasympathetic (via the vagus nerve) and the sympathetic system.
Compare the effects of Venoconstriction to Arteriolar Constriction
Venoconstriction= squeezes blood out of the veins and into the heart therefore increasing EDV and stroke volume= higher MAP
Constriction of Arteries= increases resistance to flow so increases the TPR= HIgher MAP
