  • Self-strengthening movement- more info
  • The toppling of the Manchu Dynasty- more info
  • Russian Revolution (1917) - this greatly inspired the Communists within China, taking it as the model for their own movement, and encouraging them to follow in its footsteps.
  • Death of Sun Yat-Sen (1925) - replaced by Jiang Jieshi. Sun had had fairly progressive ideals (e.g., land reform) and was open to more socialist ideals. His successor, however, did not share these ideals and was adamantly opposed to any socialist policies.

  • After the death of Yuan in 1916, China broke up into small states and provinces, each one controlled by a warlord and his private army. Each territory was ran independently and they had their own laws and currencies.
