Allegory
a story or narrative in which a moral principle or abstract truth is presented by means of fictional characters or events
Allusion
a brief reference to a person, event, or place, real or fictional, or to a work of art. An allusion may be drawn from history, geography, literature, or religion
ex. She was no Scrooge
Antagonist
The forces that work against the protagonist (other people, things, society, themselves)
Anticlimax
a sudden shift from a relatively serious or elevated mood to one more comic or trivial
Antihero
a protagonist who lacks the qualities normally expected of a hero
Ex. James in “The Liar” is a compulsive liar to draw attention to himself
Atmosphere/ Mood
the prevailing feeling created by the story. Atmosphere usually sets up expectations about the outcome of the plot. It is created by descriptive diction, imagery, sometimes dialogue
Ex. in “The Masque of the Red Death’, there is a bizarre atmosphere and a sense of doom through the use of color symbolism
Character
- fictional person in a story
- the moral, disposition, and behavioral qualities of that fictional person
qualities of the character generally revealed through dialogue, action, description. can be classified as flat, round, stereotyped, realistic, static, dynamic
Characterization
the process through which the author reveals to the reader the qualities of a character (in short stories, either directly or indirectly)
Character sketch
description of a character’s disposition and moral qualities using nouns, adjectives, and specific examples and quotations from the story. It does not usually describe what the character is wearing or physical characteristics
Cliche
an overused phrase or idea
Ex. One dark and stormy night
Compare
look for qualities or characteristics that are similar
Composition
an essay
Conflict
- man vs man
- man vs self
- man vs society/environment
- man vs unknown (supernatural)
Connotation
what a word infers or suggests
Ex. the connotation of “snake” is evil
Contrast
stress the differences of things, qualities, events, or problems
Denotation
the literal meaning or definition of a word
Denouement (resolution)
“unknotting” of the resolution to the plot or conflict
Follows the climax, constitutes part or all of the falling action
Dialect
a manner of speaking or variation on a language peculiar to an individual, a people, a social class, or a geographic region
Dialogue
the conversation between characters
Diction
the vocabulary used by a writer (appropriate to their purposes, subject, story type, characters, and style)
Dilemma
a situation in which a character must choose between two different paths of action which are undesirable
Direct presentation
when the narrator tells the reader everything about the character
Dramatic/ Objective Point of View
events are described without judgment or comment. The author does not reveal feelings or thoughts of the characters
Dynamic Character
a character that changes during the story
Epiphany
a moment of significant realization and insight experienced by the protagonist
Ex. the barber in “Just Lather” has an epiphany that revenge only begets more revenge
