Attributes of a setting
Place, time, weather conditions, social conditions, mood and atmosphere
Plot
Planned logical series of events having a beginning, middle, and end.
Plot essentials
Intro, rising action, climax, falling action, denouement.
Three parts of climax
Main character receives new info. Character accepts info. Character acts on info.
Conflict
Opposition of forces which ties on incident to another and makes the plot move
Two types of conflicts
External and internal
External conflict
A struggle with a force outside one self
Internal conflict
A struggle within oneself. A person must make some decision, overcome pain, quiet their temper.
4 kinds of conflict
Man v man
Man v circumstances
Man v society
Man v himself
What is a character?
Person in a work of fiction
Protagonist
Usually a hero or supported character in a story
Antagonist
Opposes the protagonist
Characteristics of a person
Must seem real. Must stay consistent.
Individual/Round character
Many aides and complex personalities
Developing/Dynamic character
Many sided personalities that change by the end of the story
Static/Flat character
Stereotype. Has one or two characteristics that never change.
What is POV
Point of view. Defined as the angle from which the story is told
Innocent eye POV
Story is told in the eyes of a child
First person POV
The story is told by the protagonist or someone close to the protagonist
Omniscient POV
Author narrates the story and can move from character to character
Omniscient limited
The author tells the story in third person. We only know what one character knows
Omniscient objective
Told in third person. Like a camera is following the characters.
