Short Story Flashcards
Plot
A planned series of events that unfolds throughout the story and involves tension and / or struggle.
Introduction
The setting, characters, mood, and plot are all introduced.
Initial incident
The first incident that sparks the conflict and gets the plot moving towards the climax.
Rising action
Part of the plot that leads towards the climax. The story becomes complicated and suspenseful as minor crises occur.
Climax
The highest point of action or suspense.
Falling action
Occurs after the climax and before the conclusion. All loose ends are tied up here.
Conclusion
The author’s final comment.
Theme
Central moral or lesson of the story, usually implied rather than explicitly or directly stated. (picture)
Characters
Revealed through description: action, thoughts, what is said about them, how they act and react towards others, and what they say about themselves and others. (picture)
Protagonist
The main character of the story. It is typically the hero or heroine. (Picture)
Antagonist
The character that opposes the main character. (picture - same one as # 10)
Point of view
The relationship between the author and the reader; how the story is told.
Conflict
The meeting of two opposing forces including the following: person vs. person, person vs. nature, person vs. self, person vs. technology, and person vs. society. (picture)
Setting
Definition
Place, time, and circumstances of the story. (picture)
Tone
Definition
The author’s attitude towards the subject, created through word choice and the connotation of words. (clip)
Mood
Definition
The impression created by the author and felt by the reader. (clip- same one as # 17)
Irony
Definition
A statement or occurrence that is opposite to what is expected.
Dramatic irony
Definition
The audience or certain characters are aware of information other characters in the story do not know. (picture)
Sarcasm
Definition
Underlying meaning of the words is different from, or opposite to, the literal meaning. There are two film clips)
Foreshadowing
Definition
When hints or clues are written by the author to Indicate or suggest future events.
Flashback
Definition
The current scene is interrupted by the presentation of detals or a specific moment that occurred before the present situation. (clip and picture)
Repetition
Repeating the same words or phrases for emphasis. (clip)
Symbol
Definition
An object that represents itself and something else. It typically represents an idea rather than something concrete. (Picture)
Personification
Definition
A device in which human qualities are given to a non-human object. (Clip and picture)
Smile
Definition
The author compares two things using like or as. (song)
Metopher
Definition
A comparison between two things without using like or as. (in the same song as # 26)
Imagery
Definition
A Vivid picture created in the mind of the reader through the author’s use of words and literary devices. (picture of Alice in Wonderland)
Alliteration
Definition
The repetition of consonants, usually at the beginning of a series of words. (Clip)
Allusion
Definition
An unexplained reference to a well-known person, place, or thing. (song)
Contrast
Definition
The juxtaposition of two dissimilar things. (picture)
Paradox
Definition
An apparent contradiction that, upon further analysis, contains a degree of truth. (quote)
Suspense
Definition
Uncertainty about the outcome of a story or the next events. (picture)
Pathetic fallacy
A device in which nature and / or inanimate things are described in a way that mirrors a character’s emotions or is prophetic of future events. (clip)
Hyperbole
Definition
Exaggeration of a situation or of emotions for dramatic effect. (recording)
Onomatopoeia
Definition
A word which imitates the natural sounds of a thing.(crash, boom)
Anachronism
A person, thing, or idea that is not in its correct historical or chronological time.
( Someone paying with Pennie’s in Canada)
Anaphora
Words repeated at the beginning of successive clauses, sentences, or sentences in order to achieve an effect.
Denotation
the literary or main meaning or “dictionary definition” of a word. (ex. blue = colour)
Connotation
the suggested or implied meaning of a word often emotions or associations (words can have positive, negative or neutral connotations) (ex. blue = sadness)
Oxymoron
Two or more words that we opposite used together for effect ( ex, pretty ugly, alone together)
Pun
Playing on words often for a humorous effect with the meanings
(ex, our work is tiring but we take brakes)
First person minor
The story is told by a minor character who “happens” to there. Although his/her is involved in the plot he/ her is more than a observer.(I, we, us, our, ours)
First person major
The main character tells his or her story. The author participates because the main character as his/ her mouth piece.(I, me, mine, my)
Third person omniscient
The narrator knows the thoughts of two or more characters in the story, (he, she, they, them, theirs)
Third person limited
The narrator tells the reader only what one character impressions of the characters.(he,her, his, hers)
Second person
The narrator is speaking directly to the reader,(you, yours)
