What are 5 causes of prejudice. Make sure to tell me what they mean

A

Modelling - tend to copy attitudes/actions we see in lives
Mere Exposure - tend to dislike groups who are unfamiliar to us especially after repeated exposure to these groups
Behavioural conditioning - if our prejudiced actions and attitudes are rewarded we will continue to be prejudiced
Memory availability- remember vivid incidents relating to individuals or group and then transfer impressions to the entire group
Inferiority- if we feel inferior, putting down another group of people will help raise our own self image

Explain martins deviance typology

A

Theory on deviant behaviour - explains why deviance occurs
Conformists - accept goals and means of society (earning money)
Ritualists - accept means, rejects goals (money isn’t main goal, but willing to get education and work hard)
Innovator - accepts goals, rejects means (accept money is important, reject the way to get it -drug dealing)
Retreating - reject means and goals (hippie)
Rebel - rejects means and goals, create new system. (Terrorist)

  1. Revolutionary movement - end goal to completely change society due to dissatisfaction with current structure (American revolution)
  2. Reformative movement - aims to effect more limited/specific changes in society for the better (women’s liberation movement)
  3. Redemptive movement - focuses on changing people completely (religious movements)
  4. Alternative movement - focuses on limited/specific changes in people. Does not threaten power structure/status quo, but does seek change in individuals (MADD)
