Short Answer Week 4 Flashcards
Why might one think that ethnicity is an invention?
Because it was needed for US immigration and social forces who were in need of workers. There was an overall concern for job loss and national identity.
Explain the difference between identity and identification, particularly in relationship to Indigenous communities?
Identity is how indigenous people saw themselves. Then identification was how other people saw them.
What is the difference between race and ethnicity?
Race points to the body and it is more about appearance and ancestry. Ethnicity points to culture and it is created through time given ones environment.
Why is “the case of ethnicity” considered unclear?
It’s considered unclear because of the epistemic criteria for an ethnic group it is often very contextual and can’t be applied to every group. A good example of this is how there is no commonality amongst all latinos so there is no criteria that can be used to identify all latinos.
What is “politics of difference” and a major criticism of it?
The politics of difference is an attempt to make room for racial and ethnic diversity within society. It is also meant to prevent exclusions by politically organizing groups in terms of race or ethnicity.
Explain the genetic common-bundle view of race and the (ethnical) historical familial view of ethnicity, and its advantage? GIVE EX of what race is and what ethnicity is and explain one view that tries to eliminate race or ethnicity
Genetic common view is the racial membership that requires both descending from a member of the group and possession of inheritable phenotypes.
Then the Historical view supports that ethnicity is defined by family and historical events.
The advantage of mixing the two is that we can preserve race and ethnicity without reducing or eliminating either.
