Early Period - 1770 - 1802, Early Beethoven still learning, influences from Haydn, Mozart, and Albrechtsberger, Lots emotion, (Op. 13 Pathétique Sonata, Symphony No. 1 in C Major)
Heroic Period - 1802 - 1815, More ambitious music, breaking more rules. Famous in german speaking lands, deafness begins to set in, music as drama. (Symphony no. 3 Eroica, Symphony no. 5)
Late period - 1815 - 1817, Extreme contrast in works, extreme variation technique, more difficult music, wrote for professionals not amateurs. (Missa Solemnis, Symphony no. 9 Ode to Joy)
