Example is verbal irony. Though meant to be a charitable act, Marian’s visit is motivated by self-interest (earning campfire points) rather than true charity toward the old women. They in turn do not show much charity to her.

Central image: smiling mask that speaker wears constantly. Mask disguises true feelings of pain, hurt, and despair. Image illustrates how humans everywhere often hide their pain from others behind a falsely positive attitude.
What is the overall atmosphere of “Nightsong: City” and what is the poet’s tone?
Atmosphere: one of brief and edgy respite from the intolerable tensions and violence facing the city. Moment is not very restful, as the problems still exists; waiting to return on the morrow, but for the moment, at least a pause is possible. Tone: a mix of irony and despondent hope.
