Shop Safety Flashcards
Which things in a shop can damage the lungs?
sanding and grinding dust, welding flux and soldering fumes, vapors from primers, paints and solvents, spray mists from undercoats and paint.
what type of mask for sanding and grinding
dust mask
what type of respirator for one part enamel with no hardener added, lacquers and nonisocyanate material? good for primers, sealers and noncatalyzed paints…
cartridge filter
what type of respirator for paint with hardener added, isocyanate paint vapors and mists and solvent vapors
air supplied respirator
how to check a respirator
perform both negative and positive pressure checks
what are positive and negative pressure checks on a respirator?
negative: palms of hands over the cartridges and inhale. Good fit if face piece collapses when breathing normally.
positive: cover the exhaust valve and exhale. proper fit if face piece billows out without air escaping while breathing normally.
why not use nonimpact tools on impact tools or extension set ups?
the high torque breaks and can cut off fingers
why long hair tied up
on a lift running, listening for an odd noise, your hair can get caught in the rotating drive shaft and rip off parts of your scalp, hundreds of stitches.
why do you pull, not push, on a wrench?
if it slips off, you’re likely to smash your hand into what you’re working on.
what hazard can happen with a mushroomed chisel head? How do you fix a mushroomed head?
a piece could fly off the head when struck with a hammer. use a bench grinder to reove any mushroom to form a tapered edge (chamfer) on the tool head.
if you grind a tool until it’s blue what does that mean?
you’ve probably ruined it, too much heat removes the case hardening and softens it.
4 jack points on a car?
frame rail, pinch weld areas below the rocker panels on sides of vehicles, suspension arm or rear axle.
why not weld or grind near a battery?
harging a battery produces hydrogen gas, and can explode.
