Shock and Haemorrhage DONE Flashcards
1
Q
What is the definition of shock?
A
inadequate perfusion to the vital organs (brain, heart, kidneys)
2
Q
What are the classifications of shock?
A
High output (vasodilation) - anaphylactic shock - sepsis Low output - cardiogenic - hypovolaemic
3
Q
What is the cause of carcinogenic shock?
What are the consequences of it?
A
- due to any form of pump failure, but most commonly myocardial infarction
- ABP falls and CVP rises
- the fall in BP strong activates the sympathetic nervous system, leading to widespread vasoconstriction (expect the brain)
- strong sympathetic drive to the kidneys (and, more directly, the fall in renal perfusion pressure) activates the RAAS
