Shock Flashcards
Causes:
Trauma to vessels or tissues
Fluid loss from GI Tract
(Vomiting/Diarrhea can also lower the fluid component of blood)
Low Fluid Volume
Causes: Infection Drug overdose (narcotic) Spinal cord injury Anaphylaxis
Poor Vessel Function
Causes:
Heart Attack
Trauma to Heart
Obstructive Causes
Pump Failure
A patient with a severe chest injury, such as a flail chest, or obstruction of the airway, may be unable to breathe in an adequate amount of oxygen
Respiratory Insufficiency
Result of inadequate amount of fluid or volume in the system
Hypovolemic Shock
A sudden reaction of the nervous system that produces a temporary, generalized vascular dilation, resulting in fainting
Psychogenic Shock
Occurs when a person reacts violently to a substance to which he or she has been sensitized
Anaphylactic Shock
Damage to the spinal cord, particularly at the upper cervical levels, may cause significant injury to the part of the nervous system that controls size & muscular tone of the blood vessels
Neurogenic shock
Occurs as a result of severe infection, usually bacterial, in which toxins (poisons) are generated by the bacteria or by infected body tissues
Septic Shock
Results when there is widespread dilation of the small arterioles, small venules, or both
Distributive Shock
Conditions that cause mechanical obstruction of the cardiac muscle, also impact pump function
Obstructive Shock
Caused by inadequate function of the heart or pump failure
Cardiogenic Shock
Circulation of blood within an organ or tissue in adequate amounts to meet cells current needs
Perfusion
The pre-contraction pressure in the heart as the volume of blood builds up
Preload
The part of the nervous system that regulates involuntary functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and sweating
Autonomic Nervous System
